Unit 6 Academic Essay

This unit introduces some of the key aspects of writing an academic essay. It focuses on how to understand essay structure, the importance of critical thinking, and methods for effective essay question analysis. Academic essay generally takes a set format, including introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion, each serving a certain function. The introduction sets the context for the essay, introduces the topic, and should always close with a clear thesis statement that outlines the writer's position. Critical thinking in academic writing requires students to engage in topics through deep analysis, interpretation, and argument of points based on well-supported evidence. By practicing the BUG method, Box, Underline, Glance, students are in a better position to understand essay questions so that they address the question and do not give irrelevant information.

The writing process also involves  the steps of prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing. These stages follow one another in a cyclical manner such that new ideas crop up, while the essay improves with every revision. It also focuses on topic sentences for each paragraph, which should be connected with the thesis and clearly focused on the content within the paragraph. Second, writing a good conclusion is equally important since that is where one sums up all the key points of the essay and restates the thesis without the addition of any new words. This unit further guides  students in major structural, clarity, and critical thinking features of academic writing that would be necessary in the development of persuasive and well-supported essays.
