The unit has been able to show that academic reading is all about strategies and tools that enable these people to work with complex texts. It goes on to remind the students that such academic reading shall be objective using organization aids like title, heading, and glossary in order for them to understand what they go through. These tools help them realize the organization of the text and ascertain whether or not it is relevant to their studies. Some of the common reading strategies which could help students read in a way that improves comprehension and retains more information, include skimming, scanning and the SQ3R method. This also allows the differentiation to be made between paraphrasing and summarizing.
In a broad sense, paraphrasing retains the same meaning and length as the original by rephrasing it in the student's own words, whereas summarizing condenses the main ideas down into a shortened form. Learning the differences between these two concepts becomes part of the skill of academic writing, since that will create an opportunity to be more interactive with sources. Hence, mastering the reading strategies and skills dealt with here is important for academic success since they help students to receive and process information from another kind of texts effectively.
