Unit 4 Academic Writing

This unit embraces the conventions of academic writing or standards that vary across disciplines. The major features revolve around the use of reason rather than emotion, evidence-based argument, and open-mindedness. Additionally, the purposes of academic writing would most likely vary, that is, reporting on research findings or discussing a topic. It also points out several different types of academic writings such as essays and research papers. Both kinds play a role in the process of learning of a student, which means the development of his or her writing and analysis skills that are so important in academics.

It is important for students to learn what constitutes academic writing. Academic writing isn't just voicing opinions, but it also needs a logical presentation of the arguments in an objective way, using credible sources in support of them. How structure, formality, and precision are important in student work needs to be emphasized. This would generally allow students to be critical about their subjects and hence ensure that they could express themselves in such a manner that the guidelines of academic writing in higher education could be followed.
